It’s not a new thing… but it’s a growing thing – fragrances that refuse to be gender-specific. I’m all for it. I have always preferred to wear a cologne or EDP intended for men, but at the same time have a soft spot for roses and magnolia, so a scent that hovers wantonly between masculine and feminine suits me just fine!
Which leads me to a new name to the fragrance world – chanced upon at the Scoop fashion trade fair this summer. Alice in Perfume. Yes, I know what you’re thinking: “that sounds a little girlie – not very neutral”. True, it does, but rise above that prejudice, because the name is intended to conjure up a spirit of adventure, artistry and alchemy. It’s about individuality and sensuality, “perfume with an edge… Alice with Attitude” say the creators. Perhaps think Tim Burton’s Alice. Or Alice Cooper…
The London-based independent perfume house creates hand-blended eau de parfum, sourcing fine and rare oils for the collection of, so far, two fragrances. First came Vetiver Velvet an accord of vetiver, Bulgarian rose, geranium and deep benzoin. A spiciness follows, thanks to black pepper, juniper berries and nutmeg and as it dries on the skin, what remains is a warm and sensual amber, patchouli, sandalwood and ambergris. More masculine than feminine… and sexy.
Arguably slightly more feminine is the latest launch – Aenean – but which is just as sensuous. It opens with bergamot, pink pepper, clove bud oil and bitter orange, which is followed by heady jasmine and amber before settling on musks, ambrette seed, tonka bean and patchouli. There’s enough of a smoky accent to ensure a reassuringly masculine edge. Should that matter to you…
