How street style has changed over the last 10 years
Street style is a term that refers to the fashion of youthful people that you see walking on the streets. In other words, these are not fashion styles that were created by some designer in a fashion studio or commercial company. It is basically the fashion that trends on the streets, especially in a lot of urban areas. These trends are typically inspired by celebrities and the media, In the old days, people would follow the fashion of celebrities they’d see on posters or in movies. Now that has all changed because of the internet and social media.
Over the last 10 years, street-style photography has taken off like never before. Large fashion brands are creating street style fashion and then having their photographers take pictures of people wearing those clothes while they’re out on the streets. Then, they publish those pictures as advertorials in various online fashion magazines. These tactics take away from the real essence of what a true “street style” is supposed to be, a lot of these pictures are photoshopped, filtered, and/or tweaked in some way to make them look more appealing. And when celebrities get in front of the camera to show off street style fashion, they’re creating a false narrative by overdressing and making the true street style look better than it may be.
Although true street style still exists, it is rarely advertised appropriately because of these fashion companies and brands trying to take advantage of it. Street fashion is supposed to be about identity and expression rather than simply looking good or attractive. That is why the true street-style photographers of the last decade have not been professional photographers like Bill Cunningham. They have been regular people with smartphone cameras and digital camcorders who just take pictures for fun and then post them up on the internet. This is the one true way in the modern age that you can see photographs of what real streetstyle looks like. The irony is that most people have seen street style fashion numerous times without even realizing it. Just go on Facebook or Twitter and look for personal pictures of a friend or family member that were taken in a city. Then you can see plenty of street style fashion.
