Back to Black By Belinda Morris
Eau de Parfum £82 – 50ml
I was really hoping to review Mr Ford’s saucily-named ‘Fucking Fabulous’… just so I could airily type the words without fear of reprisal. But sadly the limited edition fragrance was available only as a spritz on a spill and didn’t survive the ravages of the post. But that’s ok – I’ve typed the words anyway! Oo-er.
But happily I was able to sample the designer’s other new launch Noir Anthracite. While intended for men and looking as seductively masculine as the name suggests (metallised anthracite-coloured glass bottle with signature ‘Noir’ ribbed detail), this is a fragrance with gender fluid possibilities. I really like the sharp, metallic top note with its spicy overtones – happy to be bathed in it as well as smell it on a man. The floral heart gives way sensual, warm woody base that lingers all day.
Black Bold – eau de parfum
(£40 – 50ml)
If you like the idea of brooding blackness, but at half the price, designer Kenneth Cole’s Black Bold might be the answer. Looking rather appealingly like a vintage ink bottle, the dark, sleek bottle is wrapped in textured-leather effect material, offering a clue to the confident masculinity of the fragrance.
The top notes are sharp and zesty – but with herbal overtones – followed by a heart of nutmeg and then final base notes of woods and leather, but with a sharp edge that lingers. Nothing gender-neutral about this fragrance – this is a man thing through and through.
