GROOMING By Belinda Morris
BLUE… IS FOR BOYS
While there’s definitely a growing trend for gender-neutral fragrances, or, simply, men’s fragrances that women also want to wear, sometimes a man wants something that he can call his own. A fragrance so undeniably, unambiguously masculine that even its appearance will leave curious females in no doubt who it belongs to…
I would say that two recent releases are pretty good examples of this. ‘Blue’ is the latest male fragrance from designer Kenneth Cole which was inspired by the water, air and light of a Mediterranean summer. The instant burst of ozonicand zesty citrus notes conjures up images of a bracing morning swim – cool water and warm sunshine. After the initial freshness the scent softens to something warmer with cedarwood and amber adding a more subtle and sensual masculinity.

When you know that the founders of Alford & Hoff – Barry Alford and Jefferson Hoffman – are athletes, you can understand where they might be coming from with the launch of a fragrance. Their No2 EDT, is, they say, for the athlete in you; it’s an ‘assertively refreshing masculine composition’ that kicks off with unusual watery fruits as well as citrus notes – with a hint of herbal tones.
Then comes a warm spiciness (cardamom, nutmeg, peppercorn, star anise and ginger), followed by a drydown that’s woody, but with a hint of marine notes – an addition that always pegs a fragrance to the masculine mast (pun intended).
And the blue-green colour of the fragrance itself underscores the aesthetic –as does the understated and modern cylindrical bottle housed in its pedestal-style box. I love this fragrance – but I’d definitely prefer to snuggle-up to the man wearing it than wear it myself…
