CZECH & SPEAKE DARK ROSE
By Belinda Morris.
Question: Is it possible to wear a rose-based fragrance… and still come up smelling like a man? Well of course it all depends on the type of man you want to smell like – you wont give off a surf dude aura, or smell alluringly like you’ve just felled a tree then built a campfire, but I would says the answer is a cautious ‘yes’.
For no particular reason other than I like roses and I’m drawn to gender-neutral fragrances, I’ve been looking for something that fits this bill and I think I may have found it in Czech & Speake’s Dark Rose EdP (£150 – 100ml). The name is a good start – there’s something of the night there – and the gold and dark purple packaging also suggests Middle Eastern mystery (rather than ‘roses round the cottage door’), as does the glowing pomegranate-red bottle.
So it comes to no surprise to learn that this opulent fragrance was created for men as well as women and that Indo-Arab perfumery – techniques as well as ingredients – has been drawn upon to create Dark Rose. The intention was for the fragrance to be rich and intense, with Arabian rose de Taif extract (the oil is sourced in Grasse) at its heart.
With the first spritz there’s definitely roses… like a scent you might catch as you walk past a rose bush. But that quickly gives way to a spicy, citrusy note – the lemony oil of May Chang. Then comes the rose of Taif, blending beautifully with oud, saffron extract, musk and cedarwood. Once settled on the skin, the fragrance becomes softer, a little sweeter and very sensual.
Yes, men can wear roses.
