THE HOTTEST SUMMER FRAGRANCE RELEASES
Pall Mall Barbers
Cologne – Sandalwood & Clove (£40 – 50ml)
At the tail end of last year Pall Mall Barbers, one of London’s oldest barbershops, celebrated its 120th anniversary, and now, to mark the landmark occasion, it has introduced a signature scent. The marriage of old-school service, unwavering expertise and precision techniques come together in their four venues in the capital (Trafalgar Square, Fitzrovia, Westminster and Bishopsgate) and the new Cologne epitomizes the traditional atmosphere.
As you might expect, the initial burst is citrussy fresh and invigorating, with lemon and hints of black pepper, cardamom and almond – just what you’d want after a shave – but as it settles on the skin the spiciness of clove with florals nudges in and the warmth of sandalwood, tobacco, vanilla, musk and amber take over as it dries.
The bottle itself is clean, simple and masculine – just as it should be – and echoes the style of the grooming products, which were introduced three years ago and expanded upon last year. The signature scent is echoed in the shave system, hair products and beard treatments.
Black Bold – eau de parfum (£40 – 50ml)
If you’re looking for something that strikes an even more masculine note – with more than a hint of fashion thrown in – then I suggest you look out for Black Bold, the new fragrance from designer Kenneth Cole. The uncompromisingly black on black packaging, housing an equally dark and sleek bottle wrapped in
textured-leather effect material, offers a clue to the confident masculinity of the fragrance.
It too has top notes that are sharp and zesty – but with herbal overtones – followed by a heart of nutmeg and then final base notes of woods and leather, but with a sharp edge that lingers. While there are fragrances around at the moment that have been created to be non-gender specific, there is no ambiguity about Black Bold – this is a man thing through and through.
