The pep talk by Belinda Morris
Spring has sprung and by rights you should be feeling all perky and ready for some sort of action – mental or physical, either will do. The trouble is, you don’t. The chances are you’re still feeling a wintery sluggishness; maybe you haven’t managed to shift that flu-y cold thing that seems to have hit everyone since December and is lingering well past what is acceptable.
What you need is a short, sharp cosmetic slap; something to snap you back to something resembling life, particularly first thing in the morning – a kind of olfactory wake-up call. I recommend eucalyptus.
Obtained from the leaves of the evergreen eucalyptus tree, eucalyptus oil has been hailed for its medicinal properties and health benefits for centuries. It’s great as a decongestant and is anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory, but on a more aromatherapy level it also works as a stimulant, helping to alleviate mental sluggishness.
If you’re warming to the idea of this botanical cure-all here are a couple of suggestions for getting you out of a winter malaise. Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus Show Gel (£17 – 236ml) is a body wash that is kind to the skin (particularly if you happen to be eczema or psoriasis prone) as it contains no harsh chemicals. And while it has that peppy, zingy, fresh thing going on, it’s also been formulated to moisturize that skin without irritating it or leaving a residue. It also makes a pretty good hand-wash or bath soak.
Meanwhile Anthony Shave Gel (£18 – 177ml) is formulated for sensitive skin, with natural ingredients designed to hydrate and protect, while also providing a decent glide for your razor. Eucalyptus is combined with rosemary extract to act as an anti-bacterial and there’s also soothing, hydrating aloe vera and carrageenan (extracted from seaweed) to heal and soothe.
