THOMAS CLIPPER – PREMIUM MEN’S COLOGNE By Belinda Morris
It’s always interesting to be introduced to a new fragrance – particularly so when it’s something rather different and it happens to be British. Founded in London in 2014 Thomas Clipper is all about beautifully made collections of products for men. And what began with safety razors and organic shave oil has grown recently to include leather goods and a pretty sophisticated trio of limited edition, hand-numbered, fragrances called Unite.
Why a trio? Well why not? In fact all three have been formulated (in Grasse, France – which is the place for fragrance – and bottled in Lincolnshire) to work in sync with each other, as well as stand-alone. And so that we might experience how this actually does work, a group of fragrance writers were invited to discover ‘Country’, ‘Coast’ and ‘City’ and then play with the samples to create, describe and name our own, fourth, eau de toilette. Sadly my own triumph – Soho-inspired ‘Sex Sells’ – will never trouble the fragrance world, but I rather liked it (two parts ‘City’ to one part ‘Country’ if I remember rightly)
The point is – mixing them up does work; the don’t clash. If you leave the house in the morning in ‘City’, a contemporary fougere inspired by a London barbershop, there will be no problem adding a discreet splash of ‘Country’ (intense, masculine, smoky, oud and sandalwood sexy), or ‘fresh, sporty, citrussy Coast’, inspired by the French Riviera… before heading for a night out.
If the idea of mixing it up appeals, you can buy the Travel Edition Trio (£49 – 22.5ml), otherwise the fullsize (50ml) colognes are £59 each, or £169 for a set of three.
